What do lobster fishermen do in the winter? By mid-to late December the lobsters along the coast of Maine thin out and the weather becomes so tempestuous that most fishermen decide to end the lobster season.
At the end of the lobstering season, Maine lobstermen haul up their gang of traps and bring those traps back to dry land until the following spring. Most fishermen leave their boats mooring in the harbor over the winter and spend the winter months repairing their traps, overhauling their trapline, painting their buoys and resting up for the next season.
My father and brother already have the bulk of their traps up and trap repairs are well underway. My father and brother also build lobster boats in the winter months. The hull of the first boat they’re building this winter is already propped up in Little River Boat Shop, keeping a crew of eight men busy until the boat is launched in the spring.
