In 2011 I was contacted by The History Press, who had read my blog and asked me to write a book about my unique and intimate perspective on lobster fishing. The book, How To Catch A Lobster In Down East Maine, brings to life the rugged, independent and sometimes secretive world of lobster fishing in Maine.
The book covers the art and science of catching lobster as well as the deeply intriguing community culture that surrounds one of America’s most iconic artisanal enterprises. Chapters such as ‘A Day Out On The Lobster Boat,’ ‘Frequently Asked Questions About Lobster Fishing’ and ‘The Seasons of Lobster Fishing’ detail the basics of catching lobster while other sections of the book immerse readers in the dangers and dramas of lobster fishing, from lobster trap wars to ship wrecks. The unique culture of lobstering communities is also covered, along with my favorite lobster recipes.
How To Catch A Lobster In Down East Maine is sold in many wonderful independent book stores in Maine, including one of Maine’s favorite book stores, Sherman’s, as well as in established chains and on Amazon. I am always more than happy to sign and send copies upon readers requests.
A great read, also some of the photographs by Anthony Oragano are very good.
